While we don't consume personal care products like moisturizers and bronzers in the same way we consume our food, we are similarly giving them direct access to our bodies through the blood stream by putting products on our skin. The skin, our largest organ, is capable of absorbing ingredients used in products such as preservatives, fragrance, or texture-enhancers, that have been linked to health issues ranging from reproductive disorders to cancer. Fortunately, avoiding buying products that use unsafe ingredients is easier than you think!
A great way to navigate when shopping for a product or service is to look for an organic certification designation by a trusted, authoritative group like ECOCERT or NSF. Unlike the term "natural", the term "organic" ensures oversight and regulation to be labeled as such. Organic ingredients are grown without the use of chemicals known to be harmful such as pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, and GMO's and products must be marked by a seal on the packaging that indicates their compliance with a strict set of regulations enforced by the certification program, thus validating their purity.
One trusted program is the Ecocert Organic Cosmetic certification for natural and organic cosmetics, the European based organization that pioneered regulation for cosmetics, including sunless tanning. To obtain their certification, a minimum of 95% of the product’s ingredients must be plant based and 10% of all ingredients by weight must come from organic farming. Additionally, ingredients are confirmed to be absent of GMOs, parabens, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, silicon, PEG, synthetic perfumes, dyes and animal-derived ingredients. Their program includes regulation throughout every step in the creation process and with all stakeholders in the value chain to support a non-toxic and environmentally friendly product.
We believe that looking and feeling beautiful should not come at a cost and choosing organic is an important first step. With organic ingredients making up over 60% of our tanning solution, we have made it our mission to uncover the truth about what is and isn’t safe when it comes to sunless tanning. We’ll continue to support the organizations that make it easy for us to make informed decisions when it comes to our health and encourage you to as well!
